En esta novela histórica el autor nos describe desde una perspectiva inédita la gesta de los marinos descubridores españoles y portugueses de finales del siglo XV y principios del XVI, personificados en Colón, los Pinzón, Magallanes y Elcano, entre otros. El narrador, encarnado en el padre Pinzón, único personaje de ficción de la obra, es testigo del primer viaje de descubrimiento y de la primera circunnavegación, y nos describe también «la otra parte», la tragedia que para muchos nativos de las nuevas tierras descubiertas significaba ser dominados por aquellos hombres que se creían superiores por tener una mejor tecnología, barcos más grandes y armas de fuego El autor:
Miguel Ángel Pérez Oca (Alicante, 1944) se ha desvelado como un autor fecundo, empeñado en mostrar los avatares que sufrieron algunos personajes históricos, con toda la complejidad de una época mal entendida. Es autor de la famosa trilogía copernicana, Bruno, el loco de las estrellas, El libro secreto de Copérnico y Tomo, el librero. También ha incursionado en la ciencia-ficción, con su novela Nuestros Señores Químicos. Compagina su labor de escritor -con numerosos artículos en revistas y diarios-, con la de dibujante, actividad por la cual se le reconoce a nivel internacional.

The author of this historical novel describes from an unusual perspective the feats of the Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries, personifi ed by Colombus, the Pinzóns, Magellan, and Elcano among others. The narrator, embodied by father Pinzón, is the only fi ctitious character in the book and is a witness of the fi rst journey of circumnavigation and discovery. He also describes ‘the other side’ of it, the tragedy it signifi ed for a large number of the natives of the newly-discovered lands to be dominated by those men who thought themselves superior because they had better technology, bigger boats and fire-arms.
Enrique de Sumatra is the most interesting character in the book. He is a slave of Magellan’s, a native of Sumatra, who had already been to the Philippines before he was captured by the Portuguese and sent to Europe. Therefore, contrary to what history books usually tell us, Enrique Sumatra was the fi rst man who made the journey round the world, a year and a half before Elcano and his 17 sailors on the caravel Victory.
